The Buddha, whose name means "The Awakened One," was originally Siddhartha Gautama—a prince born to a wealthy king in the foothills of Nepal between the 4th and 6th centuries BCE.
Shortly after Siddhartha's birth, a prophet foretold his destiny. Siddhartha would become a great leader, but not in the way his father envisioned. Instead, he was destined to lead others spiritually, sharing profound teachings that would transform lives.
To shield him from the realities of life, Siddhartha’s father kept him within the palace for 29 years, surrounding him with luxury and shielding him from pain, illness, aging, and death. Siddhartha lived in blissful ignorance until one day, he ventured beyond the palace walls.
On his first journeys outside, he encountered the harsh realities of life: a sick person, an aging person, and a deceased person. These encounters shattered his sheltered perspective, revealing to him the inevitable nature of human suffering. On his fourth journey, he met a holy man who inspired him with teachings on how to embrace spirituality amidst suffering.
That night, Siddhartha left his sleeping wife and son and began his journey toward awakening. Through fasting, meditation, and learning from other holy men, he ultimately achieved Nirvana, becoming the Buddha—the Awakened One.
